For Shaughnessy, photography began as a means of self-expression during a tumultuous childhood. “Pain, confusion, and feeling lost as a kid led me to seek an outlet to express and understand myself,” Shaughnessy recalls. At age 13, a camera became his companion on exploratory walks, teaching him to view the world through new perspectives. “I realized how much better I felt afterward—it was therapeutic and introspective. My biggest inspiration was the desire to express and understand what I was feeling internally.”
This early connection to photography shaped his emotional approach to the art form. Shaughnessy’s signature style is rooted in storytelling and connection. “People often tell me they feel things when they look at my work,” he shares. “I’m proud of that because every image is created with passion and thought.”
Challenging Beginnings, Rewarding Growth
Shaughnessy’s journey to full-time artistry was anything but conventional. Growing up in foster care and facing a challenging home life, he found solace in creative expression. By 17, Shaughnessy was on his own, juggling full-time jobs while relentlessly honing his craft. In 2018, an unexpected layoff forced Shaughnessy to take the leap into photography full-time—a turning point that shaped his career. “It was one of the greatest days of my life, though I didn’t know it then. It lit a fire in me.”
Seven years later, Shaughnessy is a celebrated photographer whose work resonates deeply with couples seeking timeless, personalized images.
Capturing the Cover Magic
Creating the winter cover was a labor of love for Shaughnessy, who drew inspiration from the interplay of light, nature, and emotion. “Every object, color, and light has a feeling to it,” he explains. “The final image is an accumulation of each element working together to convey the feeling we wanted.”
With the Nevada sunset illuminating the white horse and bride, Shaughnessy crafted a visual story that feels both intimate and grand. “The shapes in nature, the way light hits textures, and the bride’s pose and expression—all of these elements evoke emotion. Nature is incredibly romantic and the perfect setting for a love story.”
